2008-09-22 | The process of hunting jobs

分享

Everybody says nurses are short here, and it is easy to find a job. In my opinion, there are lots of positions, but it is still hard to find a position you like or fit your schedule. Anyway, I hunted jobs for exact 1 month and got a full-time position which will start the coming Monday. The following is my experience of my hunting.

Job 1: Casual position in a long term care center

Hunting jobs was started in the last week of my preceptor in a long term care center. My preceptor introduced me to apply a casual position there since there were no full-time or part-time positions available at that time. I handed in my resume and got the interview next day. To be honest, I do not think I did well in that interview because I never thought that interview would take me for 1 hour and so many questions, stupid questions~haha. For example: what do you think your references will talk about you? Gosh, if they won't talk some nice words, why I choose them as my references~~ Anyway, my preceptor was my reference so she said tons of nice words for me and I got that job immediately after I finished my clinical on Aug.22. I worked there right away the following week for 5 days and declined another 4 or 5 shifts. My duty is to administer medications to 40 seniors and do some wound dress changings. It is very busy from 7:30am to 2:00pm since so many pills to give and have to crush them and beg those senior babies to swallow it~~ It is not my interest and I get tired of this after I worked only 2 days. No chanllenge, no many nursing skills.

Job 2: Part-time position in another long term care center

I submitted my resume online in the last week of my preceptor and got a response after a couple of days. I was interviewed in the morning on Aug. 25 and well done that interview. Plus I finished the medication exam after the interview. It is a part-time position only 0.4 ( we call full-time as 1.0 which you have to work for 40 hours per week) but it is day shift which is good for me. If I take that position, I have to find another job so I can make enough money for my bills. After they checked my criminal record and references, they sent me an offer but I declined it after I got the full time position. The reason that I chose to work in those 2 long term care centers is because they are very close to my home and their shifts are permenant not rotated even though it is not my interest.

Job 3: Casual position in a rehabilitation center

I got the interview in the afternoon on Aug. 25. That interview was so so. After a week, they offered me a full-time position but it is evening shift which I can not take it since I have to take care of my son at that time. Finally, they asked me to work there as casual and I took it. After I finished my license test on Sep. 10, I agreed to do orientation from Sep. 15. I just did one day there because I got the final offer from that full time position. Because these 2 facilities are belonged to capital health group, I take a full time position in a place and are not allowed to take another shift in another facility, otherwise, they have to pay me overtime. So I got a rest since Sep.16. BTW, I have to say I like working in the rehab because it is easy and comfy. Later on, after I get trained very well, I will apply a permanent position here and no rotation shifts.

Job 4: full-time position in surgery units in a hospital

Applied this job online and after 2 weeks got the interview. I have to admit that I like working in surgery because of my personality ha~ plus I can learn more. When I submitted my resume online, I applied some positions there that I could not remember what I applied. When they called me for the interview, I hardly remembered which position. They said they had 2 positions for me, one was surgery and the other was medicine, but both were 12-hour shift. I told them I could not take 12-hour shift and thought I would lose this opportunity. However, that girl told me that I could go for the interview and they would make an arrangement for my shift. I did the interview on Sep. 05.  Well done~~ only half hour interview which was supposed to be 1 hour. During the interview, I told them I prefered to work in a surgery unit even though it is a float position not a medicine unit. (Ps: Float position means you have to work in all the surgery units instead of 1 unit.) I claimed I only could work 8-hour shift and days or night shifts not evenings. Fortunately, they told me they would accept my decision and try their best to give me a position. How nice they are~~haha, I got their offer on Sep. 15 and will start on Sep. 22. Full time position in surgery~~ I am happy with it.

That is it. I applied only that 4 positions and got all of them. So I have to say there are lots positions but not easy to find one that you like. I am lucky ha~ I am the first one in my class that got a job and 4 jobs, heihei.

One more thing is I do not think I did a good job in my license test. Feeling so frastrated~~God blesses me, please~

The other thing is I can go for my SEC assessment for my RN now. So the following couple of month I will be pretty busy: divorce in Oct.; preparing my SEC assessment which will be 5 full days~~. Headache~~ Anyway, I deleted the chatting shoftware and come back to my normal track~

When can I have time to find a bf ha??

Go *** go~~
